HOW IT WORKS: THIN FILM

The refractive index and thickness of the sample are measured from the angle and loss of light when the light is not totally reflected on the contact surface of the prism and the thin film and proceeds inside the film.

HOW IT WORKS: BULK MATERIAL

For bulk samples, the refractive index is calculated by measuring the critical angle θc between prism and sample.
